These are one of the only species of Camponotus in Canada that can be actively found under rocks and living in the ground as opposed to all other species that nests in wood. However, if there are wood nearby they will often utilize them as well. They are also the ONLY polygynous Camponotus species within Canada, truly an amazing species and definitely a gem in all collections.
Camponotus vicinus is a black and red coloured species found specifically in the Okanagan region of Canada, the queens have mostly shiny black heads and thoraxes with the top portion being black and bottom red, the gasters are extremely beautiful with half red coloration. The colours vary from individual to individual, with some being more colourful than others. The workers, in general, have a red thorax with black head and gaster, but the majors can have half red half black gasters just like their mother. The colours are most visible under the sun or bright light, the workers are extremely eye-catching.
These ants are one of the largest ant species in Canada, the majors are also extremely impressive with their massive size and beautiful coloration. Queens range from 14-18mm while workers from 7-15mm
The colonies of Camponotus vicinus can grow very large, they are very active and will live in their quiet logs and develop until they are a force and can start reproducing more alates!
Overall, Camponotus vicinus is a very satisfying ant to raise from a single queen into a large colony, the brood develops at a steady pace so it wouldn't be long until you would have a beautiful young colony of Camponotus vicinus!
