Prenolepis Imparis is one of the largest and most colourful False Honeypot ant species found in Canada. Also known as The False Honeypot Ant, they are found in most regions of southern Canada. They are similar in appearance to many Lasius species like Lasius Americanus and Lasius Neoniger, they certainly do make up in color. The False Honeypot Ant queens have a shiny black head and gaster with a beautiful pattern and yellowish-orange colouration on their lower thorax, gaster and legs. The colours are most visible under the sun or bright light, the workers are extremely eye-catching too. These ants get their names from a specific worker class than can have an enlarged gaster to store the colony's resources when times are hard, these are actually just regular workers but upon becoming an adult, their exoskeletons are soft and malleable making it easier to store resources.
At Insect Supplies Canada, we sell live False Honeypot Ant queens, small colonies and even some large colonies of Prenolepis Imparis. They are one of the easiest ants to keep and are considered a great beginner species for all novice antkeepers.
Queens are normally around 7-10mm while workers from 3-6mm.
The colonies of Prenolepis Imparis can grow very large, they are very active and will live in their logs and develop until they are a force and can start reproducing more alates!
Overall, Prenolepis Imparis is a very satisfying ant to raise from a single queen into a large colony, the brood develops at a steady pace so it wouldn't be long until you would have a beautiful young colony of these gorgeous False Honeypot Ants!
